What Is Wipeable & Washable Paint?

When walls become dirty, they leave marks that cause a real eye-sore, often leading to a wall having to be repainted. This is why washable and wipeable paints were developed, that can be cleaned using a cloth to remove any scuffs or dirt. This is done by adding resins to the paint such as vinyl or acrylic that give it added durability, so that the paint film itself is not damaged when cleaned.

There is a difference between a washable paint and a wipeable paint. A wipeable paint can be lightly wiped with a damp cloth. These come in the form of vinyl matt paints, that are standard emulsion paints that have added vinyl in their formulation. This is more often than not found in the trade version of matt emulsions, which is why many people opt for trade vinyl matts when picking a standard matt emulsion to use on the interior walls & ceilings. These are suitable for low-traffic rooms that may need the odd clean down here or there.

Some other paints have been developed using acrylic resins that have even more durability than vinyl emulsions. These are durable emulsions that can be washed, or scrubbed without compromising the integrity of the paint film. These durable emulsions are perfect for high-traffic rooms such as hallways and high-moisture rooms such as kitchens or bathrooms. Examples of these paints are Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt & Dulux Trade Diamond Matt.

Wipeable & Washable Paint Finishes

As with any paint, it is important to understand the finishes they come in. Washable and wipeable emulsion paints come in a range of finishes, that includes matt, eggshell, silk & soft sheen, which all vary in their level of sheen. The higher the sheen, the more reflective a paint finish is and the more durable it is. While gloss and satin paints are able to be cleaned, these are not emulsion paints to be used on walls or ceilings.

• Matt - the 'flattest' finish of emulsion paint, making it the most modern and popular finish. It is perfect for covering imperfections on walls but is the least durable, which is why specialist durable matt finishes have been developed
• Eggshell - with the same sheen as an eggshell, eggshell emulsion paint is perfect for a slightly higher sheen than matt, but less than silk or satin. It is ideal for bedrooms, living rooms and offers more durability than a standard vinyl matt
• Soft Sheen - with a similar mid-sheen finish to satin or silk with a slightly more subtle finish ideal for interior walls
• Silk - a mid-sheen finish that is traditionally used on interior walls & ceilings
