What Is Water-Based Paint?
Paint often comes in two broad forms; water-based and oil-based. This refers to the type of solvent used in the paint. With water-based paints, the water evaporates, allowing the paint to dry, while oil-based paints use an organic solvent in the paint that evaporates.
The Benefits of Water-Based Paint
• Low VOC's - volatile organic compounds are harmful chemicals that are contained in oil-based paints that are not as prominent in water-based paints
• Quick Drying - most water based paints dry in a matter of hours where as oil-based paints often take a minimum of 16 hours to dry
• Non Yellowing - water-based paints do not yellow, which is ideal for white interior woodwork such as doors and skirting boards
• Easy Clean Up - you can clean your brushes out in water rather than white spirit
Things To Consider
There are a number of considerations when using an water-based paint. The first of which is that it is crucial to use a synthetic paint brush, as these will not absorb water, while natural bristles brushes will absorb water meaning they can only be used with oil-based paints.
