What Is A Cutting In Brush?

'Cutting in' involves the process of applying straight lines of paint along the edges of a surface. It is usually done on the line between two different colours or around trim such as light fittings and doors.

When cutting in you want a small brush that will give you the most precision possible. That is why cutting in brushes generally come in sizes from 1.5" to 4". They often come in an angled form that allows the brush to be pressed up against the surface for the straightest possible line.

What Paint Brush To Use

Deciding which paint brush you should be using can be difficult. When it comes to brushes, there are generally two broad forms; synthetic bristle and natural bristle.

• Natural bristle - these bristles are specifically designed to be used with oil-based paint as the natural bristles, from animal hair, absorb water which means they are not suitable for use with water-based paint

• Synthetic bristle - these bristles are designed to be used with all paint types and are made from artificial materials, but generally are used with water-based paints

How To Use A Cutting In Brush

When cutting in, it is important to do this before you use a roller of the main part of the surface. This will allow you to roll all the way up to the edge to prevent the framing effect that is caused when a paint brush achieves a different finish to a roller.

Cutting in is an alternative to applying masking tape to a surface, as it is a free-hand method of achieving straight lines. With your cutting in brush start an inch away from edge of the surface, brushing along the line, then gradually move inwards to the edge. Once you have your paint brush perfectly on the line, move it downwards while keeping your hand as steady as possible. You can then paint back the other way to neaten up any areas that require it.

How Much Do Paint Brushes Cost?

Paint brushes vary in price depending on the level of quality you desire. The reality is, as any professional decorator will tell you, a good paint brush is worth its weight in gold. It will achieve much better results and will last a lot longer than a lower quality one.

High-quality brushes can cost between £2.50 for a small sash brush to £13 for a large angled brush, however there is a quality brush for anyone's price range. We would highly recommend opting for a brush set such as the Hamilton Prestige 5 Piece Synthetic Brush Set, which offers excellent value for money.
