Natural Paint Brushes

Pure bristle or natural bristle paint brushes are made from natural materials such as animal hair and are ideal for applying oil-based paints. This is because these materials can absorb water, which means they are not ideal for use with water-based paints.

Here are Painters World we stock a range of natural bristle paint brushes from leading manufacturer's such as Hamilton. One of the most popular natural bristle paint sets available in the UK today is the Hamilton Perfection 4 Piece Pure Bristle Set, which contains four various pure bristle paint brushes with high-quality wooden handles.

What Is A Natural Bristle Paint Brush?

Natural paint brushes have bristles that are made from natural sources such as animal hair. This is in contrast to natural paint brushes that are made from unnatural materials such as nylon and polyester. While synthetic paint brushes can used with all types of paint, natural bristle paint brushes can only be used with oil-based paint as they can absorb water, which would make applying a water-based paint impossible.

How To Clean A Natural Paint Brush

How to clean a paint brush depends on the paint you have used, with oil-based and water-based paints requiring different methods. If you are cleaning an oil-based paint out of your paint brush, pour white spirit into a container and dip the paint brush into the spirit. Keep dipping the paint brush and working it around in the solvent until the colour of the solvent stops changing. Once this happens pour this into another container and continue the process until the solvent is clean. Put a lid on the container with the paint filled solvent and leave it for a few days. After this time, the paint will have hardened at the bottom of the container, leaving clear white spirit left at the top that you can pour back and use again!

If you are cleaning a water-based paint from your synthetic paint brush, use a mixture of warm water and mild soap to dip the paint brush into. Rinse this with water and repeat the process until the paint brush is clean. The difference between these two cleaning methods is that water can clean a water-based paint, but will not be able to remove oil-based paints from a brush and oil and water do not mix.

Leave your brushes to dry and use them again and again. Keeping good care of them will ensure you can use them time after time without needing to buy new ones!
