×Here at Painters World we have a wide range of trade eggshell paints from leading brands like Dulux & Crown.
We are often asked, what is an eggshell paint? Eggshell is a popular choice of finish today. They offer slightly more sheen than a flat matt paint, but still offer a 'flatter' finish than other options such as gloss, similar to the shell of an egg that the finish was named after! Due to this lack of sheen, they can cover imperfections on the wall & can be more durable than matt finishes. Need help deciding on which eggshell paint to opt for? Why not read our full guide to the best eggshell paints?
A large number of our eggshell paints are available for colour mixing! Either find the right shade for you by scrolling through our RAL & British Standard colour charts or simply type the shade you are looking for in the text box on each product page and the team will mix an equivalent shade just for you.

What Is Eggshell Paint?
Paint comes in a range of finishes that vary in terms of level of sheen. These finishes include, matt, eggshell, satin and gloss, with matt having the lowest level of sheen, and gloss having the most amount of sheen. The more sheen a paint finish has, the more light it reflects. Another distinguishing factor between paint finishes and their level of sheen is the durability sheen provides. The more sheen a paint finish has, the more durability it has.
Eggshell paint has slightly more sheen than a matt paint, and slightly less then satin paint. To be exact, eggshell paint has the same level of sheen than an egg, which is where it gets it's name from!
What Eggshell Paint Is Used For
Eggshell paint is a versatile paint as it can be used on a range of surfaces. The water-based version of eggshell can be used on interior walls & ceilings as a more durable alternative to a matt finish, as well as being used on interior woodwork in both water-based and oil-based forms. Eggshell paint also comes in durable versions, such as Dulux Trade Diamond Eggshell that provides a durable finish that can be wiped repeatedly. These emulsions are ideal for rooms that have high-traffic such as hallways, or rooms that have high-levels of condensation such as kitchens and bathrooms.
How Many Coats of Eggshell Paint Is Required?
Like the majority of paints, eggshell requires two-coats of paint.
Is Eggshell Paint Water-Based?
Eggshell emulsions come in both water-based and oil-based forms. As it is very rare for an oil-based emulsion to be used on an interior wall or ceiling, the water-based versions of eggshell finishes are used on walls and on interior trim, while the oil-based eggshell is reserved for interior trim if you have a preference for oil-based woodwork paint.
