×Render paints, commonly referred to as masonry paints are outdoor paints that are designed to withstand the weathering that an exterior paint must endure.
All masonry paints can be applied to exterior renders, however there are some paints that are more suitable. Emperor Masonry Paint for example is a highly breathable, silicone-based masonry paint making it compatible with silicone renders such as K-Rend. It is also just as effective on traditional renders such as cement renders as it contains nano-technology that is completely waterproof, breathable, self-cleaning & has a proven 25+ year performance. Other options include Dulux Weathershield Smooth Masonry & Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth Masonry, which both offer 10-15 year protection.
If you are painting the outside of your house, you want to do the job correctly, first-time round. Exterior painting isn't an easy task, so you don't want to have to re-do everything in a couple of years when moisture has ripped the paint off the wall. Need some help? What Is Render Paint?
Render paint, otherwise known as masonry paint, is a range of paints that are specifically designed to be applied to exterior walled surfaces, including render, bricks & stone. The majority of these masonry paints are referred to as 'weatherproof', which means they have added protection to withstand the various weathering that an exterior paint will face.
Typically, masonry paints have lifespans of between 1-10 years, as eventually moisture will be able to get behind the film of the paint, causing it to crack, peel and flake. Some specialist masonry paints such as Emperor Masonry Paint are specifically designed to have water repellent properties that prevent this peeling over the course of 25+ years. It is also highly breathable, as using a non-breathable paint will lock moisture inside the property, leading to damp problems. This is thanks to it's super hydrophobic technology & highly advanced silicone-based formulation.
Things To Consider
There are paints that are more suitable than others. For example, silicone-based masonry paints are better suited for use on silicone renders are designed to be water resistant and highly breathable. By applying a standard masonry paint to silicone render, you remove the benefits of that render as the vast majority of masonry paints are acrylic-based, meaning they are not highly breathable.
Similarly using a low breathability masonry paint on lime render will create a barrier on the wall that will seal the moisture within the absorbent lime render, causing major issues.
When painting any render, we recommend you always opt for a highly breathable, silicone-based masonry paint as it will allow the moisture of a building to be freely regulated. We especially recommend only opting for a silicone-based masonry paint if you have a silicone rendered property or a lime rendered property.
