What Is Paint For Kitchen Cupboards?
Here at Painters World we only stock high-quality trade paints that offer better coverage, higher durability & much better value for money compared to retail paints that are available at large DIY stores. These retail paints are designed for specific jobs to make them DIY'er friendly, such as bathroom paint & kitchen cupboard paint. With trade paints, these paints are not marketed at specific tasks and are simply designed to offer a certain finish on a particular surface, such as wood, metal or interior walls. This means that while trade paints are not often referred to as paint for kitchen cupboards, many trade paints are perfect for the job as they can be applied to interior wood or metal.
What Paint Finish To Use
Paint comes in five levels of sheen, which refers to the amount of light they reflect; matt, eggshell, silk, satin & gloss. These paint finishes come in a range of forms, with matt paints more often than not being designed for interior walls & ceilings, with eggshell being used on either interior walls & ceilings or on woodwork and metal. When it comes to mid-sheen finishes, satin and silk are very similar in sheen level, with silk being designed for interior walls & ceilings and satin for woodwork & metal, and finally with a high-sheen finish, gloss is almost always used on woodwork and metal.
So what paint do you use on kitchen cupboards? Well, you can use a number of products. The traditional method of painting kitchen cupboards would be to prime them using a generic adhesion primer such as Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3, followed by two-coats of an acrylic eggshell. and then a final topcoat of a protective varnish in order to prevent any wear-and-tear.
Nowadays you do not have to use a topcoat of varnish to ensure excellent performance, with paints such as Zinsser Allcoat providing fantastic durability. Zinsser Allcoat is particular is a popular choice for painting kitchen cupboards, as although it is an exterior paint, it can be applied to almost any interior surface to fantastic effect. It comes in any colour and it is available in matt, satin and gloss finishes, so no matter what look you want to achieve, it is the perfect paint.
How To Paint Kitchen Cupboards
Wondering how to paint kitchen cupboards? Here is our simple step-by-step guide:
1. Remove all doors and handles from the cupboards, or if this isn't possible ensure everything you do not want to paint is covered using a good quality masking tape. You could also take the cupboards off their fixings to be able to have full control.
2. As with any painting, cleaning the surface is crucial. Using a general cleaner & degreaser, remove any dirt and grime from the cupboards.
3. Sand down the cupboard using a light key in order to create a key for the paint to adhere to. Ensure any dust is removed before moving on!
4. Once the surface is sanded lightly, apply a general primer such as Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3, that will allow the paint to adhere fully to the kitchen cupboards. While many paints are self-priming, it is always recommended using a primer for added durability.
5. Apply a thin first coat of paint to the kitchen cupboards, ensuring the most even finish possible. The aim of this layer is not to create the strongest block of colour possible, it is simply to provide a suitable base for a topcoat.
6. Once the first coat is fully dried, apply the second coat of paint, using a sponge roller to get the smoothest finish possible. If your desired finish is not achieved on the second coat, then apply a third.
7. If you are using a standard satin or gloss paint that isn't Zinsser Allcoat or another highly durable product, we would recommend applying a finishing protective layer of Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat.
8. Once the cupboards are fully painted and dry, put the handles back and if you have taken the cupboards off then re-attach them.
