What is Galvanised Paint?
Galvanised steel is steelwork that has been immersed into molten zinc to provide the steel with a protective coating against long-term corrosion. it is used throughout construction both in a residential and commercial setting, which is why it is a common surface when it comes to painting.
Galvanised paint is a paint that can be applied to galvanised steel, either directly to the steel or when used with a primer. Due to the shiny and smooth surface that galvanising steel creates, it can be difficult for paint to adhere, which is why it is crucial to use a high-quality metal paint that is suitable for applying to galvanised, or the paint will peel and blister.
How To Paint Galvanised Metal
The process of painting galvanised metal can differ depending on the surface. If the galvanised metal is bare, it must be primed. If it has been previously painted and the paint is sound, it is not necessary to apply a primer.
1. Clean down the galvanised steel to remove any dirt, grease or rust from the surface. Any loose paint from previously painted galvanised metal should be removed.
2. If you require a primer, apply one even coating of a suitable primer to the surface and leave to completely dry as per the manufacturers instructions.
3. Apply the first coat of the metal paint to the surface using a brush, roller or spray machine. Again, leave to completely dry as painting the second-coat while wet will result in a poor finish.
4. Apply the second coat to the metal and leave to dry. Some paints may take up to a week to 'cure', which means they gradually harden over time. Check the manufacturer instructions for the galvanised paint you are using for more information.
Is Galvanised Paint Water-Based or Oil-Based?
Metal paint comes in both water-based and oil-based form, which vary in terms of the solvent they use to dry the paint. Oil-based paints will take longer to dry and contain higher levels of VOC's, although they will offer higher durability once dry. Water-based paints are quick-drying, low in VOC's and are easy to use, although they generally are slightly lower in durability. Many decorators have a personal preference, although modern technology has meant that both forms of paint offer good quality.
