What is Metal Paint?
Metal paint is a paint that has been specially designed to adhere and perform long-term when applied to metal, which is a difficult to treat surface. Metal paints have been designed both for interior & exterior metal such as radiators, pipes, fencing and furniture, with a number of treatments designed today to reduce corrosion and provide a barrier long-term against general damage. Most metal paints can be used on both interior or exterior metal and do not require a primer before painting, although there are a number of primers available that can extend the lifespan of the paint and prevent rust, such as 3369/3380 Combicolor Anti Corrosion Primer from Rust-Oleum.
How To Paint Metal
The process of painting metal can differ depending on the type of metal it is and the condition it is in. Having said this, the general process is as follows:
1. Clean down the metal surface using Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner, removing any dirt, grease or rust from the surface.
2. If you choose to use a primer, apply one even coating of the primer to the surface and leave to completely dry as per the manufacturers instructions. This will usually take roughly 2 hours.
3. Apply the first-coat of the metal paint to the surface using a brush or a small roller. The first coat should be a thin layer of paint as this is an undercoat that will create a base for the paint to adhere. Again, leave to completely dry as painting the second-coat while wet will result in a poor finish.
4. Apply to second-coat to the metal slightly thicker, ensuring there are no brush strokes or gaps in the painted surface.

Is Metal Paint Water-Based or Oil-Based?
Metal paint comes in both water-based and oil-based forms, as it is generally down to personal preference as to which one you would like to use. While oil-based paints are often more durable and cover better, water-based paints are easier to clean up and dry much quicker, which is why they are often the go-to choice for DIY'ers.
