What Is Fire Retardant Paint?
Fire retardant paint, otherwise known as flame retardant paint, is specially designed to prevent the spread of fire by releasing a flame dampening gas that slows the spread of the flames until the fire can be extinguished. Flame retardant paint has been developed both for interior and exterior walls and wooden surfaces, and comes in a range of finishes and colours just like non-retardant paints.
When Would You Use A Fire Retardant Paint?
Fire retardant paints are used in both domestic and commercial spaces where fire protection measures are required. They can be applied to:
In complying with fire regulations, it is often a requirement that a space has fire protection measured put in place to meet certain standards. Warehouses, restaurants and other commercial spaces may all require fire retardant paints to be put in place in order to aid the prevention of fires in the workplace, especially in highly flammable areas.
British Fire Regulation Standards
The British Standard Institute has developed a number of categorisations for fire retardant paints:
Class 1
The lowest standard of fire resistant paint, which ensures that there is no spread of fire.
Class 0
Class 0 products must ensure that the fire not only does not spread and temperature levels do not increase. Furthermore, it is an additional requirement that there is limited combustibility in high-risk areas, such as escape routes.
How Long Does Fire Retardant Paint Last?
The lifespan of fire retardant paint completely depends on the product you are using. Generally, they will perform for the time that the paint is sound and adhered to the surface.
How To Apply Fire Resistant Paint
Fire resistant & retardant paints are applied similarly to ordinary paints. Steel & bare wood should be primed with an anti-corrosion primer first before applying the coating. The fire resistant paint itself can be applied using a paint brush, roller or spray, depending on your preference.
