What Is Intumescent Paint?
Intumescent paint is a decorative coating that provides fire protection to a range of surfaces, including wood, steel & interior walls. It provides this fire protection by reacting with heat when temperatures reach a pre-determined level, forming a char layer that covers the surface. This char layer is of low thermal conductivity and therefore acts as an insulating system to protect the surface. and most efficient ways to protect load-bearing elements of buildings against fire. Intumescent paints are particularly effect at slowing the damage of a structure, which is why they are often used on columns, beams, floors and roofs that are paramount to supporting a building.
When Would You Use An Intumescent Paint?
Intumescent paints are used in both domestic and commercial spaces where fire protection measures are required. They can be applied to:
In complying with fire regulations, it is often a requirement that a space has fire protection measured put in place to meet certain standards. Warehouses, restaurants and other commercial spaces may all require fireproof paints to be put in place in order to aid the prevention of fires in the workplace, especially in highly flammable areas and on structural elements such as beams and columns.
British Fire Regulation Standards
The British Standard Institute has developed a number of categorisations for fire retardant paints:
Class 1
The lowest standard of fire resistant paint, which ensures that there is no spread of fire.
Class 0
Class 0 products must ensure that the fire not only does not spread and temperature levels do not increase. Furthermore, it is an additional requirement that there is limited combustibility in high-risk areas, such as escape routes.
How Is Intumescent Paint Applied?
Intumescent paint can be applied using a brush, roller or spray like conventional paints. The topcoat of an intumescent paint system acts as protection for the base intumescent coating, adding a decorative coating that can be mixed in any colour. The basecoat, such as Crown Trade Timonox Upgrade Basecoat, is applied to the surface, either after a primer is applied or straight on to sound previously painted surfaces. Once dry, the decorative topcoat, such as Crown Trade Timonox Acrylic Eggshell, can be applied.
