Oil-Based Paint

Oil-based paints, also known as solvent-based paints, have traditionally been the most common type of paint in the UK. They are widely used amongst professional decorators as they can achieve less brush strokes, offer higher durability and can be easier to work with than water-based paint alternatives. They do come with an unpleasant odour and can yellow over time in white shades, however nonetheless they are an excellent choice of paint especially for interior woodwork and exterior woodwork.

We stock a wide range of trade paints here at Painters World from leading brands like Dulux Trade Paint & Crown Trade Paint that all offer excellent value for money and much higher quality than their retail versions. Furthermore, a large number of our oil-based paints can be mixed in almost any colour thanks to our paint mixing service.

What Is Oil-Based Paint?

Paint comes in two broad forms; water-based and oil-based. This refers to the type of solvent used in the paint. With water-based paints, the water evaporates, allowing the paint to dry, while oil-based paints use an organic solvent in the paint.

The Benefits of Oil-Based Paint

• Sheen - oil-based paints can achieve a higher sheen level than water-based emulsions

• Durability - typically, oil-based paints are more durable, allowing more resistance to wear and tear

• Exterior Use - in the form of pliolite, oil-based exterior paints can be applied all year round as the water in water-based paints reacts poorly in wet conditions

• Flow - many decorators prefer working with an oil-based paint as they can offer a better flow on the paint brush, which leads to a neater finish

Things To Consider

There are a number of considerations when using an oil-based paint. The first of which is that it is better to use a pure bristle paint brush as these are designed for oil-based paints. This stems from the fact that you cannot use a pure bristle paint brush with a water-based paint as these can absorb moisture, meaning they are reserved solely for oil-based emulsions. Furthermore, oil-based emulsions can have a longer drying time and can only be cleaned using white spirit, which is not the case with water-based paints.

What Surfaces Can You Use An Oil-Based Paint?

Although oil-based emulsions were previously used on interior walls & ceilings, that is one of the only surfaces where oil-based paints are not generally used. Oil-based paints are used on:

• Interior woodwork

• Exterior woodwork

• Masonry

• Interior metal

• Exterior metal

• Floors
