What floor paint to choose?

When choosing a floor paint there are a number of questions you need to consider. i.e. What traffic will be on the floor? Will it be light foot traffic or heavy fork lift trucks & lorries? Then you need to know what type of surface you are painting? Is it standard concrete or power floated? Has it been previously painted? This article is designed to make it easier for you to choose the right product for your job.

Step 1) Preperation

The most important part of any painting job is preparation. When it comes to floors you need to first sweep any dirt & dust up then apply a degreaser. Degreaser is especially important in areas where there are often oils and residue, such as Car Garages & Workshops. We recommend Rust-Oleum Degreasers such as ND14 & Epoxyshield 2901

Step 2) Primer

Primers are not always necessary on floors, there are a number of factors that come into account. If it is an unpainted standard concrete floor follow step 1 then apply a thinned down coat of Floor Paint Topcoat (10% thinner).

If you have a Power Floated floor you will need a primer to grip to the floor as it is a very smooth surface normal floor paints will not get good enough adhesion so we recommend 2 options -

2.a) Light to Medium Traffic / Prime with 7200 primer and then finish with 7200 topcoat.

2.b ) Heavy Duty traffic / Prime with 3333 two pack super adhesion primer ready for overcoating with any 2 Pack Topcoat.

If the floor has been previously painted and is in sound condition then usually you will be fine to overcoat with any floor paint. Bear in mind the floor paint you choose will only be as hardwearing as the paint you are overcoating.

If the floor you are painting is in poor condition. i.e.. flaking and loose. You will need to remove as much as possible before following the steps above.
